A Letter from Julie Miller, 2016 Campaign Chair

I was honored when Kelly Brenneman asked me to be the United Way Campaign Chair for the upcoming 2016 campaign. Our focus will be on Health and Prevention Initiatives, something that I am passionate about as your Knox County Health Commissioner. One of our goals this year is to bring attention to overall Health and Wellness which includes, but is not limited to, physical health, mental health, oral health, etc. In addition, I would like to tell you how your investment is making a difference in people’s lives. Mr. P was a client of the Winter Sanctuary.  Mr. P’s story is one of success:

Mr. P was always a hard worker and was never without a job, so when TRW closed its doors, his way of life was in disarray. He fell behind on his rent, child support, began to suffer from depression and soon found himself homeless.  Lucky for Mr. P, he walked into the Winter Sanctuary, a homeless shelter and a United Way Partner Agency, and spoke with the Executive Director/Client Advocate Heidi Burns regarding his situation. Heidi put Mr. P in touch with an agency in town that counsels people in poverty, and between Heidi and other local agencies, Mr. P now is caught up on his child support, has a car, lives independently and maintains a fulltime job. United Way does not want to just support a shelter, we want to give clients/residents the opportunity to get out of their situations and succeed. It’s not a hand out, it’s a hand up.

Thankfully, Mr. P. had all these resources available because of your investment in the community. That is what makes your donation to United Way so unique. You are able to support 28 programs in 17 partner agencies. I, as your campaign chair, want to personally thank you for your support. It is changing lives!

As we prepare to kick off our $1,000,000 United Way Campaign, I invite you to join our LIVE UNITED team:

☑ Please review the 2017 Community Investment Agenda to learn about the strategic planning already done by volunteers to support our community’s education, financial stability and health needs in the upcoming year.

☑ Please make a personal and/or corporate investment in Knox County’s effort to LIVE UNITED by September 9 and be recognized as a United Way Pacesetter at our campaign kickoff breakfast on September 16.

☑ Please host a LIVE UNITED campaign, offering employees fun opportunities to unite in creating change.

Because you are important to this community, I am confident that you want to see many of the same community successes that I long for. Please join me in being a part of the solution…because great things happen when we all LIVE UNITED!

Best regards,

Julie Miller, 2016 United Way Campaign
